Air crew sprint to save patient
A DEVON Air Ambulance crew were forced to make a 400-metre life-saving dash on foot to help a man who suffered a heart attack.
The air ambulance was alerted after the victim collapsed in Okehampton and stopped breathing. The helicopter was deployed from its Exeter base just one minute after the 999 call was received. The call advised that an elderly man had stopped breathing.
Nigel Hare, paramedic and operations manager, said: "The patient was situated in the town centre, but the nearest appropriate landing site was in Simmons Park. This meant that my colleague Nigel Lang and myself had to run, carrying all our equipment, approximately 400 metres in order to reach the patient. Although he had stopped breathing, he was successfully resuscitated and taken to the RD&E Hospital emergency department team."
