CITY teenagers took on the roles of the whimsical characters of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland story for a recent week of performances.

A cast of 65 students spanning all year groups at St Peter's School in Exeter have been rehearsing Alice the Musical, by Paul Boyd, since September.

The set involved seven huge screens on to which light and animation was projected and the cast wore wacky Victorian influenced costumes.

Over a week, students performed to more than 1,500 people including a performance to six city primary schools.

Ben Ashford, who worked on the lighting desk, said: "It's been a fantastic experience allowing me to learn a lot through the practical work."

Nicole Batchelor, who played Alice, said: " This has been a great experience for me. When I found out I'd got the part of Alice I was excited and very nervous, as I've never had a part in a show before." Wardrobe supervisor Flora Laney-Hubbard said: "You have to be very organised but it's good being given the responsibility of doing a real job. Being part of the show has bee exciting."
