THE Exeter mother who launched an anti-drink driving campaign with the Echo after the death of her daughter has renewed a plea for support to help it reach its next milestone.

The number of people signed up to Anna's Campaign on the social networking site Facebook stands at just over 1,950 — and a push is now on to hit 2,000 as soon as possible.

The group has become a symbolic way for people in Exeter and further afield to show their support for Anna's Campaign. Ali Morrish, who launched the campaign with the Echo in December last year, has urged people to do what they can to help it hit 2,000.

Mrs Morrish, 45, of Mount Pleasant, lost her daughter Anna, 21, in 2008. Anna was the passenger in a car being driven by someone who was over the legal alcohol limit.

Support for the campaign has been widespread; it received the backing of senior police officers who praised its role in helping to reduce drink driving over Christmas. During an emotional meeting with Mrs Morrish and the Echo, Prime Minister Gordon Brown pledged to consider backing a booze ban on new drivers as part of a review of drink-drive laws.

As Anna's Campaign on Facebook approached 2,000 members, Mrs Morrish told the Echo: "Less than 50 people are now needed to reach this milestone for Anna's Campaign, so please sign up if you haven't already.

"One of the ways the site has grown so much over the last few months is that people who have joined have also been inviting their friends to get involved with it.

"I would ask as many people as possible who haven't done this please to send out an invitation.

"It would be terrific if we could reach 2000 as soon as possible — what a wonderful and fitting tribute it would be to both the campaign and to Anna herself."

“Yes, I support the review of drink-driving laws as assured by the PM. There should be harsher sentences and more dissemination about the dangers and devastation that drunk drivers can cause.
My hearfelt sympathies go to this young lady's family. Rest assured that your noble efforts shall go a long way !”
