DRINK-drive campaigner Ali Morrish is delighted her message is reaching a wider audience after a video she made had a "profound" impact on an audience in Derby.

Ali, of Mount Pleasant, Exeter, said she was pleased her message was so well received when it was shown as part of a presentation by Derby City Council's Road Safety Partnership to hundreds of students at a local college.

During the video Ali speaks of the impact and lessons that need to be learned after she lost her daughter Anna, 21, to drink-driving in 2008. Anna was killed in a crash while getting a lift home from a party from someone who had been drinking.

After receiving widespread support throughout the local community in Exeter since its launch in the Echo in the run-up to Christmas, the team from Derby discovered details of Anna's Campaign on the internet. They decided to include it as part of a presentation to raise awareness about drink-driving.

Ali's part of the presentation was focused on the dangers of being a passenger and knowing whether the driver is over the limit — something she has been particularly keen to highlight throughout the campaign.

The video has initially been shown to nearly 250 teenagers on the public services course.

Aidan Ryrie, road safety officer for Derby City Council, said there had already been strong interest from other courses and colleges in the city and regular screenings would follow throughout the year.

And the initiative has attracted interest from the Echo's sister title the Derby Telegraph, which in turn has seen support for Anna's Campaign continue to grow.

Mr Ryrie said: "It was a thought-provoking moment for everyone. The fact it related to real life and to people and not just something on a theoretical level definitely focuses the mind. Anna's mum's account definitely had a deep and profound impact. It has already been shown to 245 students but we have been contacted with requests for it to be shown in another areas of the college and even further afield."

Devon & Cornwall Police recently credited the campaign with helping to reduce the number of drink-drivers caught during the festive season. Anna's Campaign is now approaching 2,000 members on its Facebook page.

Ali said she was delighted that her message was being spread through local authorities in other areas of the country.

She said: "It has always been my intention to spread the message as far as possible and I am delighted Derby council has picked the campaign up and taken it on board and that the video was so well received. The more people we can get interested and involved, and the further afield we can spread the message, clearly the potential is there for more lives to be protected."
