The Exeter Board (a joint committee of Devon County Council and Exeter City Council) has provided £5,000 from its Community Grants budget to help recruit and train hosts for a new scheme – Crashpad – which provides emergency housing to 16-25 year olds with nowhere else to stay.

The scheme is run by local charity Nightstop Devon, which helps homeless young people in Exeter. Nightstop now needs Crashpad hosts and has launched a Spare Rooms Appeal for 2013. Young people stay with hosts for up to two weeks at a time while Nightstop helps them look for somewhere permanent to live.

Kevin Hunter, Nightstop Coordinator says: “In the current economic situation, we’re seeing more and more young people who don’t know where they’ll be sleeping from one night to the next.

“Most young people who use our service have become homeless due to family breakdown.

“Crashpad can give these youngsters some stability and breathing space to help get their life back on track.”

Hosts receive full training and expenses of £15 a night (over £100 a week). In return they provide an evening meal, breakfast and a listening ear to their guests.

Andrew, who became homeless after losing his job said: “Without Crashpad, I would not have even known where to start. Having a bed for two weeks means you can sort stuff out, get a job, get fed and recharged.” He added: “I’ve got my own flat now because of these people.”
