LAZLO Beesley from Exeter has been named the South West's Electrical Apprentice of the Year.

Sparks Magazine, the publication for apprentice electricians, hosts a hotly contested competition every year to find the best electrical apprentice in the UK.

After triumphing at the regional final at Petroc in Tiverton, where he beat competition from as far away as Falmouth and Swindon, Lazlo will head to the national final in May.

Lazlo, who is due to complete his three-and-a-half year apprenticeship this summer, is employed by A K Thomas Electrical Contractors and trained by DCET Training in Exeter.

He said: "Attending the event was an enjoyable and enhancing experience, and the competition was keen but friendly.

"I would like to thank my employer and the team at DCET for giving me the experience and skills to demonstrate best practice – the standard of work in the competition was very high, so I was delighted to win and I look forward to representing AK Thomas, DCET and Devon at the national final in May."

Bob Gooch, Lazlo's training officer at DCET, added: "I was a bag of nerves but Lazlo was quick, cool and accurate during a very complex test.

"Getting this far in such a tough competition is an honour. It is particularly good for DCET as they are the only non-college provider in the competition."
