Approval for 102-bed hotel
APPROVAL has been given for a new 102-bed hotel on the outskirts of Exeter – in spite of it being criticised by Exeter Civic Society for its "bland" design.
The £6.5m scheme will stand on the corner of Honiton Road and Fitzroy Road and includes a 200-cover restaurant.
Outline planning permission for the Premier Inn had already been approved but the scheme came before the city's planning committee again because of the criticisms lodged by Exeter Civic Society.
Members of the society wrote to the city council pointing out that this is an important site on a main entrance into Exeter and, as such, they felt that a landmark building was required. However the design was defended by Premier Inn as being 'contemporary architecture' with clean lines and suitable for this site. Members of the planning committee agreed.
