The Art of Dick Twinney
The Oystercatcher
Last week I mentioned going across the River Bridge from Teignmouth to Shaldon to go to primary school. It was this journey to and from school each morning and afternoon that without doubt played an important part in my enthusiasm and passion for the natural world. When the tide was out the exposed sand bar, called Salty, was alive with sea birds and waders which I did my best to identify. One bird which always stood out and was the easiest to name was the beautifully plumaged oystercatcher. It also had the loudest piping call which seemed to echo across the river and to this day whenever I hear this evocative sound it always reminds me of walking to school all those years ago. This portrait of an oystercatcher is on Mawgan Porth beach where we often see them on our winter dog walks.
