SOME of our very own Green teamers have met one of the world's leading authorities on animal behaviour.

Dr Jane Goodall is a primatologist who has spent the last 40 years studying chimpanzees.

And the trio featured on this page were lucky enough to meet her.

Star Clapp, 12, and Ryan Ellis and Daniel Flynn, both 13, all from Exeter St Luke's Science and Sports College, were introduced to Dr Goodall when they travelled to London to mark their college's eco-friendly achievements at the Roots and Shoots awards.

The school's Green team were awarded a bronze award for all the work its members have been doing and the three were invited to attend the day which was held at London Zoo. Here is their report:

"When we got to London Zoo we went in a special way past the penguins.

"There were eight other schools there out of a possible 600 so we felt very proud. Also most of the other students were a lot older than us.

"We set up our display and lots of people said how good it was and the Director of London Zoo, David Field, was really impressed and showed it to his education people.

"Our display had a world with a chimpanzee in it. Around the world we had all the roots of the organisations we work with and support us and lots of leaves showing everything we had done," they said.

"Dr Jane came and talked to us and we had a photo taken with her and her special monkey, Mr H. The H stands for hope and that is what Roots and Shoots is all about, everybody doing something positive in their community to help other people and the environment. Ryan asked Dr Jane to sign our Green Team poster, which she did." They added that being Green team members had opened up so many opportunities for them.

"We now run the St Luke's Green Team and help organise the junior leaders.

"We will be busy next term as all the secondary schools have a big energy monitoring and saving project. We will also be planting up our fruit, vegetable and herb area and doing bird watches."
