Barry: I'm over injury problems
TARGETMAN Barry Corr hopes that signing for Exeter City will spell the end of his injury nightmare.
The former Sheffield Wednesday striker has been plagued by back and shoulder problems throughout his career.
But Corr, who trained with the Grecians this week along with fellow new boys defender Scott Golbourne and triallist Richard Duffy, is determined to put his injuries behind him and fulfil his potential at St James's Park.
City's medical staff have conducted a thorough investigation on the 24-year-old and are confident he can remain injury-free next season.
"I have had a bit of a bad injury record down the years but I hope they are behind me now," said Corr, who signed a one-year deal with the Grecians.
"I just want to stay clear of injuries now and get out on the pitch. I have spoken to Ian Andrews (City's sports science coach) and we have been going through some exercises.
"I am really excited about joining Exeter City and I just want to help them to do the best we can."
Corr rejected the chance to join Bournemouth and several other clubs to sign for the Grecians.
And the 6ft 3in striker admits that City's management team persuaded him to pledge his future to St James's Park.
"I spoke to Steve Perryman a few weeks ago and he really sold the club to me," said Corr.
"There are really good people here who want to take the club forward.
"I had a few other offers knocking around but the way this club is run helped me to make my mind up.
"It is a small club but the manager seems very ambitious and I can't wait to get started.
"The manager said he wanted to get the best out of the players and that is what I want — to be the best I possibly can."
Director of football Perryman has also backed Corr to shake off his injury woes with City.
And the former Tottenham Hotspur star thinks the targetman will prove to be a top signing for the Grecians.
Perryman said: "I'm very pleased. I have followed Corr for a couple of years.
"We are aware he has had an injury problem, but I think he can get over that with us, so I think he can be a good addition to the frontline and has a lot to offer."
Corr started his career at Leeds United before moving to Sheffield Wednesday in 2005.
After a brief loan spell at Bristol City, Paul Sturrock took him to Swindon Town where he has been for the last two years.
Corr is relishing the prospect of taking on his former club Leeds United on the first day of the season at Elland Road.
"I started my career at Leeds at the age of 16 and it was a great place to be," he said.
"They were in the Champions League at the time although they have dropped down since then.
"But it was a great place to learn — watching the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Mark Viduka and players like that.
"I am looking forward to playing against them on the first day of the season, what a great way to start.
"Leeds have got brilliant fans and I am sure there will 25,000 there for that opening day game.
"They are obviously a good side but there is no reason why we can't go there and win."
Corr accepts that he faces a battle to establish himself in Tisdale's first team plans.
But he says he will do everything in his power to press his claims for a starting spot.
"My first aim is to try and get in the team," he said. "I am not coming here and expecting to play straight away.
"I just need to work hard in pre-season training and try and get myself a starting place. There are lot of good strikers here so there is good competition for places. That is healthy at any club because it keeps everyone on their toes.
"I will be fighting for a place in the team and see how it goes."
