Big-name celebrities among clientele of natural mattress firm
SINCE its birth eight years ago, local baby mattress manufacturer, The Natural Mat Company, has gone from strength to strength and now counts celebrity mums such as Halle Berry, Kirsty Allsopp and Gwyneth Paltrow among its fans.
As the company works towards 100 per cent organic certification, Peter Tindall and I decided the time was ripe to invigorate the brand with a new look and feel to align with its natural ethos.

The re-brand has include a website redesign, a new logo and total shop re-fit for the retail store in London's Notting Hill.
At the heart of the re-branding is the desire to focus on the company's core strength of 100 per cent natural sleep for babies. At the same time we wanted to take the brand out to the wider parenting market.
We're delighted with the new look. We were one of the pioneers of green baby products and have always ensured our mattresses are as environmentally sound as possible. The new logo parallels the natural and sleep-enhancing properties of our product.
We started in a boatyard in Topsham in 2000. The inspiration came from my frustration with the poor quality of synthetic mattresses found on boats. I'm a keen sailor.
I decided to look for an alternative and found natural fibres to be a superior substitute for mattresses on board, as they are naturally breathable.
Looking for a natural baby mattress ahead of the birth of our first child, I had a similar struggle. All I could find were poor-quality synthetic mattresses. So we grew the business to encompass the baby market.
Peter Tindall, an old friend, joined the company as a director and we set out to develop the perfect natural sleeping environment for babies and children, using only natural fibres in the mattresses. After nine months, we launched the first range of natural baby mattresses.
As parents, both of us are passionate about using completely natural products, sourced from the highest quality suppliers and our products are made by hand at the factory in Topsham.
Every parent wants to ensure their child gets the best in life and since babies spend almost two-thirds of their first year asleep, the mattress is a good place to start.
We're working hard to develop our range of mattresses and organic baby bedding, for use on land and at sea. That now includes a unique 'baby and child' collection of natural crib and cot mattresses, organic bedding, a select range of contemporary nursery furniture, baby clothing and gifts.
Our range includes organic coir, natural latex and mohair. Each mattress provides parents with the peace of mind that babies will have a safe and restful night's sleep on the highest quality natural fibres available.
All our mattresses are handmade and have a pure cotton cover which can be washed at 60°C. They're tufted with pure lambswool that keeps baby warm in winter and cool in summer. The lambswool is treated with eucalyptus, lavender and lemon essential oils to create a natural anti-dustmite protection and aid sleep.
Halle Berry chose our mattresses for her daughter Nahla because of their non-allergenic properties.
