Blue Monday - Advice for employers
Gloomy weather getting you down?
It's going to get worse before it gets better: researchers claim that the third Monday of January is the most depressing day of the year.
Apparently today is the day that we feel at our lowest ebb.
Perhaps this is due to post Christmas fatigue, credit card bills, work and not to mention the weather!
Whilst some might not regard this as a scientific fact 'Blue Monday' may have implications for businesses and employers, with a potential rise in sickness and absence levels.
James Edmonds, Solicitor in Employment Law at WBW Solicitors in Devon explains:
"Regardless about whether today is the most depressing day of the year or not, employers need to be pro-active towards the management of their employees. Having effective policies to deal with employee underperformance and sickness is fundamental but employers should also ensure employees are feel supported and motivated. An effective workforce is vital to a business achieving its goals and people management will require an employer's constant attention."
