EXETER'S Becky Brown ended her season on a high as she scooped bronze at the Sainsbury's UK School Games in the 300m hurdles at Gateshead International Stadium.

The 16-year-old Exeter Harrier clocked 44.13secs at the annual multi-sport event.

Having only taken up the hurdles this year, the Maynard School pupil was over the moon to be taking home a medal.

"It's my last race of the season so I'm really happy with the medal and it is a brilliant way to end the season because it leaves you happy during winter training — or at least until the hard work starts," she said.

"I'm pretty happy with how this year has gone. This is my first year of competing in this event and I've taken part in my first international and received my first England kit for the schools' international.

"Before this year I was a 100m sprinter. I ran a 4x400m relay for someone for a bit of fun and I got quite a good time so I thought, 'let's give it a go.'

"And now I have found success with it and ending my season with a bronze just proves to myself that it was right to swap and I can't wait to start my second year now."

Elsewhere, fellow Exeter Harrier Rosie Chamberlain was fifth in the 800m in a time of 2.17.85mins.

The 15-year-old Isca College pupil was also fifth at the English Schools' Championship earlier this summer and she admitted she was frustrated by not bettering that display.

"I'm a bit disappointed with how it went but there's nothing I can do about it," she said. "Hopefully I'll be back next year and get a medal."

The Sainsbury's UK School Games is managed by the Youth Sport Trust, a national charity that works with more than 450 school sport partnerships across the country to improve the PE and school sport experience for all young people. For more information visit www.youthsporttrust.org.
