EXETER'S Dan Bulley is bidding to make a name for himself at the World University Games in Belgrade next week.

The former Plymouth Argyle and Yeovil Town trainee has been included in the 20-man Great Britain squad which flew out to Serbia yesterday.

And while the striker is hoping his goals will fire his country into the medals and banish the painful memories of their quarter-final defeat two years ago, he is also hoping to make a few watching scouts sit up and take notice.

Bulley, who is currently studying sociology at Buffalo University in upstate New York, said: "I am hoping to be in the MLS draft next January, but you never know who will be watching in Serbia. My aim is to get a professional contract.

"I want to play football at the highest level I can and if I got a contract now I will push on and continue improving.

"I'm looking forward to the World University Games. We have got to better what we did last time and get into a medal match — to claim a medal for my country would be a great feeling."

During the Bangkok Games in 2007, Great Britain reached the quarter-finals, where they crashed out to Canada, conceding the winning goal five minutes from time.

Former Tiverton Town striker Bulley led the line throughout that tournament and scored three goals in the process.

But the 24-year-old, from Fleming Way in Wonford, is hoping to do even better this time around and believes Britain have a squad capable of challenging for honours.

Bulley said: "The tournament is in Europe this time so the heat and humidity won't be so bad and we have got professionals in the squad from the likes of Kettering Town and Bradford City.

"The squad is looking better all round this time. The standard of the teams is improving all the time but I think we have got a squad with a lot of ambition."

Britain have been drawn in pool A of the competition, where they will face Mexico, who they drew 1-1 with last time around, hosts Serbia and Ghana.

They must finish in the top two of their group in order to qualify for the quarter-finals and ensure their inclusion in the next World University Games in 2011.

Bulley says he anticipates the group games will be tough, but he says there will be bigger challenges awaiting Britain if they do qualify.

Bulley said: "The Japanese are very good, as are Italy and Ukraine, who got to the final last time. The standard of the games is up to a world under-23 level, so a lot of the teams have professional players in their sides."

Great Britain's second group match, against Serbia, will be screened live on Eurosport on July 2.
