Bus drivers join green scheme to aid environment
EXETER bus drivers are joining in a green points scheme to cut fuel consumption.
It is part of a multi-millionpound investment in a hi-tech eco-driving system by bus operator Stagecoach.
From next month Stagecoach drivers will start using the GreenRoad system to help reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions, improve passenger comfort and cut the risk of accidents.
The company wants a four per cent reduction in fuel consumption using the technology, which is being rolled out on its fleet of 6,500 buses outside London.
It is part of the group's five-year sustainability strategy and follows a successful 12-month pilot programme .
A key element of the initiative will be an EcoDriver incentive scheme giving employees the chance to earn "green points" that are converted into financial benefits from a potential £900,000 annual bonus pot.
The GreenRoad 360 system uses a dashboard traffic lights-style system to provide drivers with real-time feedback on their driving style, including speed, braking, acceleration, lane-handling and turning.
Driving decisions are responsible for 90 per cent of all accidents and up to 33 per cent of fuel spend, according to research by GreenRoad.
The GreenRoad system incorporates online reporting, analysis and coaching to help drivers work with their managers to further improve their skills and decision-making.

“It's the same in Torquay, once again there was insufficient communication from Stagecoach regarding re-routing of buses when Fleet Walk was closed. The lack of information caused a lot of disruption and inconvenience to service users but Stagecoach let their customers down by ignoring them totally.
Operation manager Richard Stevens said 'the work would cause enormous disruption' but then let everybody down by not keeping customers informed as the chaos ensued.
Stagecoach services are okay but when things go wrong Richard Stevens and management don¿t seem to have a clue and kept up their reputation for bad customer service.”

“Stagecoach have got new buses but radios don't work half the time and staff toilets at the bus station aren't kept clean. Drivers do their best but are let down by poor management.”

“BUS operating conditions vary enormously in Exeter and services are regularly held up.
In order to allow for this a few minutes, here and there, usually at the termini, are built into ''running schedules''.
When buses make ''good progress'' there is also some waiting in the High Street because it acts as an interchange and is a significant timing point in the timetable.
When waiting more than three minutes drivers are instructed to turn off bus engines except where there is a faulty starter or some other defect and the engine has to be kept running.
The problems really start when the timetable starts going ''out of sequence'' and buses bunch up and run together.
On the A route between Alphington and Thornpark Rise, via High Street, buses regularly run in convoy and with the trailing bus running nearly empty - this is an incredible waste of fuel.
It is also very inconvenient for passengers who often have to wait for long periods and then have two or three buses running together.
Not enough is done to space buses out to approximate the timetable and the radios still don't seem to be working properly.
During much last year bus radios were not working at all.
There is often a controller logging buses through the High Street and the mystery is why they aren¿t being used to space buses out to reduce an incredible waste of resources and pointless waste of fuel.

“Gribble. If they have to wait in the high street that must mean that they are on time. if they were late they would not wait in the high street with the engine running. So, they must be running to the timetable. Not the brightest of people are you!”

“Going Green
what a joke
Why dont the drivers switch off their engines when in town at the bus stops, instead of poluting the air.
It would also help if they ran to a time table.”
