DESPITE having severe visual impairment, the winner in this category was praised for always putting others first.

A pupil at the West of England School and College on Topsham Road, Harry Roberts has been described as caring and considerate – and will even share his snacks at break time.

Harry, who was nominated by Henry Wilcox, a tutor at the school, helps his fellow students in a variety of ways including helping one, who is a wheelchair user, to sell programmes at Exeter City home games. Henry said: "He has a visual impairment and misses many learning opportunities and social cues.

"But he will give sighted guide to those who have no sight and will wait for students who are wheelchair users and escort them so they are not alone or feel left out. He will always share whatever he has."

Judges said it was a tough category but 16-year-old Harry's story "really tugged at the heartstrings". They said his outstanding commitment to caring for others, despite his own difficulties, was praiseworthy. They also wanted to stress that although this category is sponsored by the school, this was coincidental and all entries were judged on their merits.

Nineteen-year-old Georgina Whiting, who is a member of the Mid Devon Young Carers Project, was highly commended by the judges who were impressed by how much time she had dedicated to caring for others throughout her childhood.
