Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter expects his players to learn a hard lesson from their 30-19 Aviva Premiership home defeat to Northampton Saints on Saturday.

The Chiefs have not won in three top-flight matches and now face Heineken Cup matches against Clermont Auvergne and Leinster.

The Devon side return to Premiership action against Sale Sharks on February 8, after LV= Cup matches Bath and the Saints.

However, Baxter expects his seventh-placed side's challenge for a top-six finish to be strengthened by those experiences.

He said: "They are some challenges for us, but it is what this season is about for us. We've always got to look to improve and move forward.

"We want to be a top-half side regularly and challenging for the top four in the Premiership, so we've got to learn our lessons from games like that one against Northampton.

"It will be a perfect test for us and we have a lot of fresh players. We have got a strong squad, capable of playing through the next four weeks, and we will look forward to it.

"I'm looking forward to going to Clermont, we tend to play well in the Heineken Cup."

Baxter also played down the significance of the Saints becoming the first Premiership side to beat Chiefs at Sandy Park this season.

He said: "To lose any game at home is disappointing, but I'm not here feeling too despondent about it.

"I don't think we were too far away from winning that game," Baxter added.

"It would not have taken any more physical endeavour from us, it just needed more mental sharpness and better control of certain parts of the game."
