FESTIVE cheer filled the streets as crowds of people turned out for a Mid Devon town's Christmas lights switch on.

Tiverton's Mayor Councillor Paul Graham performed the honours by turning the lights on and illuminating the town.

The lights are usually switched on as part of the town's carnival but this year formed a separate event.

One of the most popular attractions was Father Christmas and his grotto. Youngsters who visited Santa got a gift.

Tiverton Town Band provided entertainment along with the Singing Aloud choir and members of Tiverton Amateur and Junior Operatic Club. And pupils from St John's Catholic Primary, Heathcoat Primary and Blundell's Preparatory School performed Christmas carols, delighting the crowds.

Despite there being fewer lights on Fore Street and Gold Street, Tiverton Town Council's Christmas lights committee and the Tiverton Traders' Association, who organised the event, said the seven decorated Christmas trees would help maintain the town's festive appearance.
