Church reaches 150
THE 150th anniversary of a Devon church and school has been marked with a celebratory mass.
On Sunday, May 29, 1862, which was the Feast of the Ascension, St Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Axminster, was officially opened
It was built from local stone and in the Gothic style with land provided for a presbytery, a priest's garden and a school. The cost was estimated to be £3,000.
At the anniversary celebrations the Bishop of Plymouth Christopher Budd acted as the principal celebrant at masses that took place at the church and on the school field.

Parish priest Father Michael Koppel said: "After both the masses, the congregation made their way to the school hall to see the exhibition illustrating the history of church and school.
"For many people, this was clearly a trip down memory lane, bringing together former classmates who hadn't seen each other for years. And the refreshments were excellent."
