PENALTY hero Richard Duffy believes he still has some way to go before he is playing his best football for Exeter City.

The defender, who struck the decisive spot-kick in the Grecians' tense shootout success over Bristol Rovers in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy earlier this week, has been in fine form this term and a return to the Welsh international squad has been mooted as a result.

However, while Duffy is relaxed about his prospects of playing for his country, the former Portsmouth man is determined to become a star performer for City on a regular basis, continuing against Sheffield Wednesday at St James's Park tomorrow.

Duffy said: "I have put in a couple of decent performances this season, but I feel like I have still got to get to a level where I can maintain that week in and week out. I haven't done that yet.

"There's definitely improvement to be made, nobody can claim to be the finished article.

"I think a recall to the Welsh squad is a long way away at the moment. A new manager (Gary Speed) has just come in and I just hope he will do well. If I'm called up then great – it would be a nice bonus for me – but otherwise I'm not going to lose any sleep over it."

Duffy capped an impressive display at the Memorial Ground on Tuesday night with the winning penalty, which he coolly slotted into the bottom left corner.

Progress to the southern area final of the Trophy was nothing more than the Grecians deserved following their stirring second half display.

But Duffy warned that City would not be able to allow their standards to slip this weekend, when free-scoring Wednesday pay the Park a visit in npower League One.

He said: "We have got to go out and perform to the best of our ability and if we do that then we will have a chance.

"Last Saturday (a 2-0 defeat to local rivals Plymouth) we know our game wasn't the best. But in the second half on Tuesday we showed we're a good team. That was a big positive for us, considering the possession we had and the chances we created.

"We respect every team we play but we don't fear anyone – we are looking forward to Saturday."
