I'D go one further than letter writer John Grater, who last week provided a suggestion in the event that Mid Devon District Council has its way and closes toilets at Phoenix Lane, Tiverton.

Mr Grater's idea was to put up a sign at the bus station, pointing towards the toilets provided at the council headquarters in nearby Phoenix House.

These toilets are 'nice, warm, well lit', he told us, and are presumably provided for the use of anyone visiting Phoenix House to pay their council tax, use the library or admire the expensive glass sculpture.

It's a very good idea, and the council could hardly complain. Their toilets are public, after all.

But wouldn't a better point be made if we were to discover where chief executive Gerald Hirsch spends his pennies, and used that facility instead?

We could all troop out of the bus station into Phoenix House for a mass protest.

This 'pee-in' would certainly be one of the more unusual actions in the history of public discontent in Devon, and might be what is needed to convince Mr Hirsch and his well-paid colleagues that the relatively small amount of money to be saved by closing the toilets in Phoenix Lane, is pee-nuts.
