Community cash prize would give gift of light
ALLOTMENT holders are hoping the Echo's community cash competition will shed some light on a small problem.
The St Thomas Allotment Association is entering our Cash For Your Community competition because it has a club house without any electricity.
Winning the competition, which is being sponsored by Western Power Distribution, would mean the allotment holders would be able to purchase some solar panels which would allow them to meet in the evenings – and to run their fridge.
The association's co-ordinator Christine Fraser said: "We had a quote for getting mains electricity on the site, but it was three times the cost of what a small number of solar panels would be.

"A small range of solar panels would give us lighting, power for computers, power for our fridge in the Veg Box, which is what we call our community meeting room.
"It is a second hand steel container with a built-in kitchen. It is fabulous – we all love it. But there is no electricity anywhere on the allotment site.
"Solar power would enable us to hold meetings in the evenings which we can't do at the moment, make the Veg Box available to schools as a teaching resource and, in the summer, have a fridge for catering for our families' open days and lunches, as well as coffee mornings and committee meetings."
Why not join the St Thomas Allotment Association and enter our Cash For Your Community competition?
It features a top prize of £2,000, a second prize of £1,200 and a third of £800 and there are 40 smaller amounts up for grabs.
But to have a chance of winning you have to enter.
Nominations have to be in by noon on Monday, February 11.
Nominations can be from voluntary and community groups based in and benefiting people in Exeter and the surrounding areas, Mid Devon and South Devon.
