WE might not have seen much of the sun lately but as soon as it does come out and temperatures rise there will be one place parents and children will flock to in their droves – the city's free outdoor paddling pools.

The city council opened the pools in Heavitree and St Thomas Pleasure Grounds earlier this year following criticism over the length they were available last summer, but so far poor weather and a recent spate of vandalism has meant they have not been used as much.

The pools are regarded as a real asset to the area by many families. In the summer lots of children can be found there splashing around and having a great time.

The four-acre St Thomas Pleasure Ground was opened in 1891 and the popular paddling pool was added in 1938.

Heavitree Pleasure Ground also has a long history. It opened in 1906 and today it now boasts skateboarding, basketball, BMX, tennis, bowls and play facilities, as well as its popular three linked paddling pools.

The pools at both locations stay open until the end of the school holidays in September.

Local families can also make use of Topsham outdoor swimming pool. It is more than 30 years since the pool first opened its doors after many years of fundraising by locals.

Open from May to September, the pool welcomes locals, visitors, a thriving swimming club and the early morning Nutters Club. It is heated, can be accessed by a set of tiled steps, and ranges from a one-metre shallow end to a three-metre deep end.

The giant inflatable, family float sessions, adults-only swim sessions, private hire, plus spectator seating and lounging at the poolside make it a popular place to visit.
