Council bosses apologise after sending out thousands of wrong council tax bills

A Devon council has apologised after sending out thousands of incorrect council tax bills to residents.

Mid Devon District Council has discovered that many of the bills received early this week included figures that were not calculated correctly.

It meant the bills were between £2 and £5 bigger than they should be.

A spokesman said: "We apologise for this mistake and are taking steps to re-issue the bills as soon as possible with the correct lower amounts."

Those living in the parishes of Brushford, Clannaborough, Eggesford, Kennerleigh, Loxbeare, Stockleigh English, Stockleigh Pomeroy and Upton Hellions you have the correct bill and are not affected.

All other council taxpayers will have received bills that are up to £5 more than they should be. They will be sent a new bill as soon as possible.

Head of Financial Services Andrew Jarrett said "On behalf of the Council I'd like to sincerely apologise for our mistake and for any confusion caused. As soon as this error was spotted we acted quickly to let people know and to sort out the problem".
