Country show music a success
WHAT a great evening of live music was had on the Saturday night of the Thorverton Country Show, mostly provided by local musicians, mainly from the village.
Opening set went to So What featuring saxophone, keyboards and a rhythm section playing some nice laid-back jazz. Next to take to the stage we had the sounds of The Shadows from Trekking with numbers such as Wonderful Land, Dance On, Foot Tapper and Apache – all hits for The Shadows in the 50s and 60s.
Following Trekking we had a four-piece by the name of Pym's Number Three. I did enjoy their version of Metallica's Nothing Really Matters and their last number, The Who's Pinball Wizard. Alternative Plan was on stage next and their alternative rock style, full of youthful energy, really did impress me, as did their version of the Jimi Hendrix hit The Wind Cries Mary.
Rude Awakening – a seven-piece band featuring sax, trumpet, keyboards and guitars – was full of energy right from their first number and had people dancing all the way through their one hour set.
Stay Lucky played a wide range of music, featuring their three part harmonies on The Beach Boys' Sloop John B, Neilson's Everybody's Talking and even Black Sabbath's Paranoid.
The final set of the night went to The Fabulous Thorvertones. All dressed in black funeral director top hats and black coats, they really did look the part on stage and the music backed up the look.
This was the brainchild of Geoff Bulley and Mike Jefferies and congratulations to them for organising such a good night.
