At 4.17am today, two fire appliances and a water bowser were called to a report of a crane on fire on the M5 motorway heading northbound between junctions 27 and 26, between Sampford and Chelston.

Upon arrival crews found a fire within the engine compartment of an 82 tonne mobile crane unit.

Crews awaited the closure of lane one before being able to access the engine compartment.

Once lane one was closed the crews were able to extinguish the fire using a hose reel jet, small tools and a short extension ladder.
