Cross is central to faith
THE cross is central to Christian devotion from early times being the most easily recognisable symbol of the Christian faith.
Many Christians choose to wear it as a declaration of their faith and being asked to remove it or hide it would cause significant distress as if to admit that the cross was something to be ashamed of.
Objections have been raised based on health and safety law, meaning that the wearing of jewellery in certain workplaces may not be appropriate. That may sometimes be correct.
However, in Shirley Chaplin's case, the health and safety issue was only raised at a later date and after lawyers became involved.

Employers should be able to reasonably accommodate a person's desire to wear the cross as an expression of their faith, so long as no genuine health and safety or other issues absolutely prevent this.
Other faiths are permitted to wear religious symbols in their workplace, why aren't Christians?
