A keen pair of campers who revolutionised the way sites are booked are encouraging sports clubs to give up their pitches for cut-price accommodation during the Olympic Games.

Geoff Vaughan, from Cullompton, and his business partner Rhian Evans, have launched Camping at the Games, which will provide a night’s stay for no more than £10.

Three community sports clubs have so far signed up to provide temporary campsites during the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. All are close to the sporting arenas.

Camping at the Games is a spin-off from Campingninja, a website which launched in 2010 which allows campers to search for sites and make bookings online.

Ms Evans, co-founder and director of Camping at the Games, said: “This is already proving to be a hit with families, groups of friends, couples and volunteers and it is encouraging to see how much support there is already from across the globe – so watch this space, there will be more sites to come.”

Bookings are now officially open and the first clubs to sign up to the initiative, which is expected to offer cheaper deals compared with other Olympic accommodation on offer, are Reading RFC, Wodson Park Sports Club and Blackheath RFC.

Apart from providing cut price rates for overnight stays, the campsites are expected to provide a “fantastic atmosphere” for ticket-holders, volunteers and those looking for somewhere to celebrate the event.

The scheme also offers sports clubs the chance to engage with the community and benefit from a financial boost through camping fees and other activities they may provide.

Greg Hunter, Reading RFC chairman, said: “This is a great opportunity for raising funds for us to put straight back into developing rugby within out community.”

Reading RFC is less than 10 miles from Eton Dorney, where the rowing will take place, and Wodson Park, Ware, is eight miles from the Olympic Canoe Slalom and Blackheath RFC is based at the heart of the games.

Ms Evans said: “It is great to see these sports clubs embracing the opportunity to benefit from the Olympic legacy and improve their facilities for their communities.

“While they all benefit from a fantastic location for the Olympics, each club is unique and will be offering something slightly different, so we envisage a huge demand for our sites and it is well worth taking a look to see which takes your fancy.”
