Cully triumph marred by injury to winger Laskey
CULLOMPTON coach Charlie Mahon admits Saturday's 34-3 win at Yatton was soured by a bad injury to winger Mark Laskey.
The pacy No. 14 suffered a broken ankle just 13 minutes into the South West One West clash and is likely to miss the rest of the season as a result.
And, while his teammates racked up a healthy margin of victory against the North Somerset strugglers, Mahon says all their thoughts after the game were of Laskey.
"Mark's injury took the edge off the game," he admitted.
"It was an innocuous tackle, there was nothing notable about it, but it was clear he was in a lot of pain. There was a delay with the ambulance coming and of course it affects you if a player picks up an injury like that.
"We all felt for Mark because he's a top lad and a dedicated player. It's such a shame — he'll be three months in plaster and that's his season over."
Following the break in play, Cully went on to crush the home team.
The visitors were forced to soak up early pressure before they eased into a 24-3 half-time lead by letting their backs run.
Lee Powell was the main beneficiary of Cullompton's more expansive game, going over for two well taken tries.
Chris Griffiths and Alex Brooks also crossed for the away side while Adam Pearce kicked a couple of penalties and four conversions to truly hammer home their advantage.
Mahon said: "They were big up front, but once we started moving the ball around they were dead in the water. We played some good ball and it was nice to see us have so much territory. By the second-half it was over as a contest really and it petered to a finish.
"The conditions deteriorated and we had already made sure of the result so it was a strange end but we were glad of the win."
The victory pushes Cully three points clear of seventh-placed Avonmouth with games in hand on the sides above them.
