Cyclist escapes serious injuries in bus collision in city centre

“Glad he was ok. Seen a lot of criticism of both cyclists and bus drivers.. My take on things.
Ive never had a problem with the buses, driving, courtesy etc. I am an experienced cyclist, raced many years ago, and am very confident on the road. I make sure I stay in the centre of the road rather than hogging the side, ALWAYS approach buses from the right hand side so they can see in the mirror, not the left, I dont try to cut around them or go for gaps that arent there etc, and I find that if you give them courtesy, you get nothing but courtesy in return. Ive never had a bus cut me up, i find buses quite happy to patiently sit behind me on the road (but then i can go 25-40kph happily so i dont realy slow them down).
what i will say, is that there are some idiot cyclists in exeter. Ones that cut from the left of the right of the road to get that extra ten metres. Who go down the middle of the road between buses going in both directions on sidwell street, who cut every red light, cut across junctions and generally give other cyclists a bad name. If they cant be sensible and courteous, why should bus drivers show any courtesy to them in return?
I actually think a lot of the cyclists in exeter need serious guidance on how to ride on the road. Dont cut down the inside of a bus, it cant see you and it will cut in on you. Dont jump lights and all that crazy stuff.. you are not going anywhere that is that important its worth risking your life for.
The biggest problems in exeter are actually pedestrians who simply do not look before they walk out into the road, and cars at the co-op juntion of sidwell street who cut in front of you underestimating your speed.
As i say, ive never had a problem with buses. I think most recognise my bike by now and know i can ride at a fair speed, but also will take the centre of the road and not put myself in danger. Treat them with courtesy and common sense and you get it back.
On a side note, its about time the police started stopping the idiots who dont wear a helmet on their bikes. As stupid as you can possibly get.”

I had a witness account of the incident and the cyclist was NOT at fault.

The bus driver acknowledged that he drove carelessly and was the cyclist was NOT in the wrong.

Bus drivers in the City have no regard for other road users. They pull out of bus stops before being allowed out, squeeze past in tight spaces and have a general disregard. Not all I hasten to add. I certainly have come across a fair few in the past couple of weeks.”

The cyclist may well have been at fault, but it could equally have been the driver not looking, or failing to drive safely. I, along with other cyclists, have stories of being driven off the road on the High Street. Most bus drivers are skilled, courteous road users, but unfortunately there is a dangerous minority who either drive without due care, or deliberately put people's lives at risk. There are many people, like the "anti-cyclist" commentor below, who feel that cyclists do not belong on the road and they therefore have carte blanche to act aggressively around them (by the way, "sticking a rod in the wheels" of someone who is doing nothing but cycling down a road is common assault, and it's rather distasteful that the Echo have allowed this comment to stand). This lack of concern for vulnerable road users is bad enough, but it is appalling that it exists amongst professional drivers, and that Stagecoach do not take complaints seriously. If the driver was at fault in this case then hopefully the publicity will encourage Statecoach to change their attitude and to start investigating drivers who should not be allowed on the road.”
