Delight as Topsham pub goes from being told it must improve to being five-out-of-five
A Topsham pub has gone from being told that “major improvement is necessary” to being rated five-out-of-five for food hygiene.
The Passage House Inn in Topsham received a visit from Exeter City Council’s environmental health team just days after the Echo published reports, which are publicly available, highlighting some of the businesses which had been given a score of “one” as part of the Food Standards Agency system for hygiene in the past 12 months.

It has now been reassessed and placed at the top of the scale after proving that staff had acted on recommendations that were made.
Following a freedom of information request, reports written by the city’s environmental health team were published that showed they had issued 29 restaurants, cafés and food businesses with one-out-of-five hygiene ratings in the past 12 months.

The Passage House Inn in Ferry Road, Topsham, was one of those, but owner Lionel Lavoine expressed his delight at the new rating which was issued yesterday (Tuesday, March 5).
He said: “We had never had a score of lower than four before last year’s inspection.
“We take pride in our work and in the cleanliness of our kitchen – I take great care to ensure everything is spotless.
“I do not feel last November’s report was a fair reflection of our business. The main problems which were found related to paperwork and we have taken measures to fulfil the recommendations made and put new systems in place.
“Having the one rating was very misleading, and I am delighted we have now been given five."

“I've eaten at the Passage many times and never been anything other than very satisfied. It does seem that the downgraded rating was very unjust - especially when a lot of it appears to be simply about paperwork, not poor hygiene as some people might have believed.
The 5 out of 5 score is deserved. I'll be eating at the Passage this weekend.”
