Delighted O'Flynn wants the plaudits for ten-man Exeter's winning goal at Wycombe

Exeter City striker John O'Flynn is claiming the decisive goal that earned the ten-man Grecians three invaluable points at Wycombe Wanderers.

O'Flynn's shot seven minutes from time was superbly saved by Wycombe goalkeeper Jordan Archer, low down to his left, but as the ball squirmed loose, it was bundled over the line by unfortunate Chairboys defender Kortney Hause.

It was the only goal of a game in which City played for 50 minutes with ten men after Jamie Cureton's petulant red card. But while Hause got the final touch, City's Irish striker says it was his goal.

"It was definitely going in," O'Flynn said. "It was a good shot and a good save by their 'keeper, but it was spinning in. Their fellow was running back at pace and has knocked it in, but I will definitely be claiming it because the shot was on target and it was spinning in from where I could see.

"It was a great ball from Gowser [Alan Gow] and we said we would play one-one with Gowser just behind me for exactly that reason. We know he will create chances and he created that out of nothing really. I was lucky to get that chance and I hit it well and luckily it went in.

"I nearly got another one where the 'keeper kicked it straight to me, but the fellow got a last-ditch tackle in, so it could have been 2-0. But we will take a 1-0 win and we will get the wounds sorted and rest up and get ready for York City on Saturday."

The win – Exeter's eighth on the road this season – was a real boost for the Grecians after they picked up only one point from home games against Oxford United and Barnet over the Christmas week.

"We went into the two home games hoping for six points, but expecting to get four at least," O'Flynn said. "To come away with only one point was very disappointing for us, for the fans and for the club. We just said that we would take the positives out of the last game, which was a good start against Barnet in which we created a lot of chances and had good movement.

"We tried to stay as positive as we could and I think we took that into the game at Wycombe, although our game plan went out of the window when we went down to ten men. It was about digging in and working hard. It wasn't pretty, but three points is three points and we will take that."

O'Flynn added: "It was a great result for us and we did it the toughest way possible as well with ten men. We had to dig deep, but we knew we could keep a clean sheet and thought that hopefully, we would get a chance and we would tuck it away, so it was great to get the three points. It definitely wasn't a pretty game, but we sent our fans away with a smile on their faces."

City's away form this season remains in stark contrast to that at home where they have won only three times.

"I think it is all about habits," O'Flynn said. "We are in the habit of winning away from home and scoring the first goal and you go into the game thinking you are going to score goals. But the habit at home is that our heads drop when we go a goal down.

"I love playing at home, the fans are great and it is a great atmosphere, but it is something we have to address. We could have been at least 4-0 up by half-time against Barnet and I do think we will have a game where we blitz someone. Hopefully that will come sooner rather than later."

Meanwhile, the Grecians' trip to Torquay United, which was postponed just before Christmas due to a waterlogged pitch, has been rearranged. The match will now take place at Plainmoor on Tuesday, January 15, with an 8pm kick-off.

All tickets that were purchased for the original fixture remain valid for the rearranged game.

Any supporters that are unable to attend the new date can return their tickets to reception at St James' Park and will receive a full refund. These tickets will then be re-released for sale.
