Plans to create a controversial 'Devonwall' constituency spanning the Devon and Cornwall border and encompassing Bude, Bideford and Launceston, are in tatters after David Cameron lost a Common's vote on boundary changes this afternoon.

The re-drawing of the constituency boundaries across Britain, which would have given the Conservatives an advantage at the next General Election, were dealt a death blow in the Commons after the Liberal Democrats turned on their Conservative coalition colleagues.

MPs voted by 334 to 292, majority 42, to delay the review of the boundaries until 2018 after Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg withdrew his party's support for Mr Cameron's plan in retaliation for the failure to make progress on House of Lords reform.

“I was at tonight's party with many of the Cornish patriots, activists and politicians who worked so hard to destroy this threat to our Country.

I was honoured to be in the company of such dedicated people who never lost sight of the eventual aim!

    Kernow bys vyken!”

“Nothing to do with "Devon wall" of course, it was a vote against cutting the number of MPs from 650 to 600. The Lib Dems opposed it as they stood to lose up to 20 seats. They prefer more government and more MPs for their own sake.”

"constituency shake-up will be postponed until 2018 at the earliest."
