A relationship charity which operates in Tiverton says new divorce figures make grim reading.

Relate in Mid Devon, which operates in Exeter, Tiverton and Okehampton, is having to support more couples than ever whose marriages are suffering due to money worries.

The Office for National Statistics says there was nearly a five per cent rise in the number of break-ups in 2010 compared with the previous year.

John Loughton, head of public policy for the charity, said this was “no surprise” considering the financial climate but half of these people had children under the age of 16 living with them.

The divorce rate was highest among couples between 40 and 44 and the average duration of marriage was eleven and a half years.

Mr Loughton said in response to these figures: “It’s no surprise that the divorce rate is rising given the pressures that couples and families are under. In fact we are seeing more people than ever coming to Relate because of money worries.

“The combination of rising unemployment and rising inflation creates a pressure cooker environment for relationships. But given that, 60 per cent of separated couples would have liked to save their relationships.

“We need the Government to do more to ensure that everyone has access to relationship support at a much earlier stage, especially those on low incomes.

“We know that couples wait over two years before coming to Relate. Today’s statistics are a stark reminder of the cost of ignoring relationship difficulties. We would urge all couples to seek help as soon as they start having problems,” added Mr Loughton.

Relate is one of the main organisations which helps couples to separate and work on a positive co-parenting relationship so that children do not get caught in the middle of a “difficult and emotional” adult process.

The charity is urging people who need support the most to get in touch much sooner rather than later, as counselling can be given to anybody over the age of 16.

Manager Rebecca Wellaway said: “We have been encouraging couples to come for a one-off session where niggles and resentments can be aired.” and dealt with before they become major issues that can lead to the end of the relationship and separation.”
