TRY scorer Phil Dollman said playing simple rugby paid off for Exeter Chiefs as they beat Coventry.

The 45-11 success was Exeter's 13th successive win in the Championship and saw them stretch their lead over Bristol to six points.

Strangely it was also the fourth time in the last five home games against Coventry that the Chiefs have scored 45 points.

The Sandy Park outfit amassed 27 of their points in the second half as they secured a bonus point against the cash-strapped outfit.

"We're pleased to get a big points victory," said Dollman. "Coventry showed a bit of fight in the first half and it was tough to break them down.

"We stuck to our patterns, tried the simple stuff and it paid off in the second half.

"It was good to get 27 points in that second half but we could have got a few more.

"They showed a bit of fight back in the last 10 minutes and played some good rugby, so we were happy to score that many points."

Coventry's players headed to Exeter a week after their club went into administration and were helped by the Chiefs, who paid their travel costs.

Dollman said Exeter's players felt for their opponents and were keen to chat to them after the game to find out what has been going on.

"I think their problems were in the back of our minds a bit, but towards the end of last week we concentrated on ourselves more," Dollman said.

"After the game we could find out a bit more about it, have a chat to the (Coventry) boys.

"It's a tough situation to be in, no player wants to go through it, and after the final whistle you can start to think about it more."

Dollman bagged his first try at Sandy Park on the way to the win, adding to scores from Haydn Thomas, Chris Budgen, Mark Foster, Saul Nelson and a penalty try.

The Welshman said his score, after Paul McKenzie tapped Danny Gray's kick into his path, was more typical of a Budgen effort from a metre out.

"It was more of a Budgen try, I didn't have to go very far — I just flopped over the line," he said.

"I was happy to receive that. Macca did all the hard work out on the wing and I was happy to dive on the ball."

Dollman is now expecting a hard derby at Plymouth Albion this weekend.

"It will be a tough game," he said. "Chatting to the boys it seems Plymouth is a tough place to go and will be a local derby as well.

"They've pulled off some good victories this year, they've put in some good performances but we'll be looking to go down there and play effectively again.

"We've got some decent games coming up and we've got to try to keep it going, keep on the roll we're on."
