A CAMPAIGNING mum has urged people to consider the personal cost of drink-driving, as well as its potentially tragic consequences.

It is three weeks since Anna's Campaign was launched in the Echo and so far it has focused on the often tragic consequences of being at the wheel after drinking.

Ali Morrish, whose 21-year-old daughter Anna died in a crash involving a drink-driver in 2008, said motorists should consider the impact a conviction would have on their lives.

The Echo has featured the stories of some convicted drink-drivers during the course of the campaign. Sean Carrick and Michael Abbott, both convicted drink- drivers, outlined the devastating impact it has had on their lives.

Mrs Morrish, of Mount Pleasant, Exeter, said: "The campaign has so far focused on the potential of being involved in a crash. But it would be a good time to remind people of what would happen to them if they were caught drink-driving. The two convicted drink-drivers who spoke to the Echo provided powerful testimony to that."

The message was endorsed by Inspector Richard Pryce, who heads Devon and Cornwall police's drink-driving campaign.

He said: "Often this is what hits home more than the thought of having an accident. People don't think that will happen to them.

"But anyone caught drink-driving will face a day in court, lose their licence and face a hefty fine. As a result of their driving ban they could lose their job and home.

"As well as the potential for causing a crash, it could also have a major personal impact on someone's life."

“WELL I HAD A FRIEND WHO DRANK AND DROVE SO IWARNED HIM TO STOP, BUT AS USUALL THE CRY WAS THAT 'HE COULD HANDLE HIS DRINK' WELL HE DIDNT STOP SO I REPORTED HIM ON THE 0800 555 111 NUMBER AND HE WAS CAUGHT DRUNK BEHIND THE WHEEL AND GOT BANNED AND FINED. SERVES HIM RIGHT HE COULD HAVE KILLED SOME INNOCENT PERSON. I WOULD HAVE NO CONSCIENCE IN DOING IT AGAIN, AND I IMPLORE YOU ALL IF YOU KNOW A DRINK DRIVER THEN YOU SHOULD REPORT THEM NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE.”
