A Mid Devon man who was killed when his soft-top car overturned and landed on its roof last week has been named as Matthew Grossett.

The 28-year-old from Morchard Bishop, near Crediton, died at the scene of the crash on the A377 at Newton St Cyres, near Exeter, on Wednesday, January 11.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident, which resulted in Mr Grossett’s VW Golf convertible resting upside down in the road just past Quicke’s Farm at around 11.10am.

Police say they are keen to speak to witnesses or anybody with information about the collision.

A spokesman said: “Investigating officers are trying to identify a witness who may have been directly ahead of the purple Volkswagen Golf convertible when it overturned.

“This witness is believed to have stopped following the collision and returned to the scene.”

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and he was formally identified on Thursday.

Police arrived to find the man was trapped inside his vehicle with serious injuries and the road between Cowley and Hookway was closed until 3.15pm.

There have been a number of serious traffic collisions on the A377 over the past few years and 17-year-old Ryan Johnston from Bow died after his 50cc moped collided with a Jaguar X-Type in May 2008.

In May the following year, a pick-up truck and a Dairy Crest lorry collided head-on near Newton St Cyres and the 28 and 39-year-old drivers were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Two men were also taken to hospital suffering from head injures and whiplash when the vehicle they were driving collided in July of the same year.

Three people were also hospitalised after a collision involving a VW Golf and a Vauxhall Zafira in January 2010. Emergency services said the force of the impact caused one of the vehicles to be thrown into the air.
