EXETER Chiefs have been handed an intriguing draw in the first round of the Middlesex Sevens next month.

The Sandy Park outfit will take on invitational side HFW Wailers — a sevens-specialist team who qualified through the National Sevens Series.

They tend to draw their players from English and Welsh clubs, with former Exeter players Steve Jones and Hamish Smales playing for them last month, along with ex-Bedford back Luke Fielden.

The Chiefs are one of eight Aviva Premiership clubs taking part in the tournament at Twickenham on August 14.

They are expected to field the majority of the squad that played in last night's Premiership Sevens Series at Northampton.

As well as the Wailers, the other invited teams are England, Scotland, Kenya, Wales, the Army, White Hart Marauders and Samurai International.

All teams are guaranteed at least two games, with first round losers going through to the plate.

Fixtures, first round: London Irish v Leicester (10.30), HFW Wailers v Exeter Chiefs (10.50), Wasps v Newcastle (11.10), Saracens v England's Help for Heroes (11.30), The British Army v Scotland's Thistle Trust (11.50), Kenya v Leeds (12.10), Wales' Amser Justin Time v Harlequins (12.30), White Hart Marauders v ULR Samurai International (12.50)
