Exeter Hospital Worker Remanded in custody after five rape charges

A HOSPITAL worker has been charged with five counts of raping a teenage girl and indecent assault.

Christopher Seldon, 46, who is understood to have been employed in a security role at the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital, has appeared before Exeter magistrates. Hospital bosses told the Echo they have taken action to "safeguard patients and other employees" after being informed about the allegations but would not confirm if he had been suspended from his post.

All the charges relate to a 15-year-old girl and are alleged to have occurred in Exeter.

Seldon, of Spenser Avenue, Exeter, is charged with raping the girl between July 31, 2007, and September 1, 2007. He is also charged with a second count of rape between August 31, 2007, and October 1, 2007, a third count of rape which relates to an alleged incident between September 30, 2007, and November 1, 2007, and a fourth count which allegedly occurred between October 31, 2007, and December 1, 2007. The fifth charge of rape relates to an alleged incident which occurred between November 30, and January 1, 2008.

Seldon also faces a sixth charge of intentionally touching a girl aged 15 on January 31, 2007, that touching was sexual when she did not consent and he did not reasonably believe that she was consenting.

He was not required to enter a plea at this stage and the case was sent to Exeter Crown Court. His next court appearance will be on December 11. He was remanded in custody because of the nature and seriousness of the alleged offences, and the court has also recorded that the decision not to grant bail was made for his own welfare.

A spokesman for the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital Trust confirmed it was cooperating with the police investigation.

In a statement, the trust said: "A member of our staff has been charged with offences which do not relate to his employment with us.

"We have been co-operating fully with the police during their investigations and acted to safeguard the patients and other employees as soon as we were informed by the police of their concerns. This matter is now sub judice and any further trust action is confidential to the employee."
