Exeter University’s controversial Safer Sex Ball has been cancelled, the Exeter Student’s Guild has announced.

A spokesman for the Guild told the Exeter University newspaper Exeposé: "In spite of significant efforts in recent years, the event’s association with promoting safer sex has been overshadowed with a less positive image, leading to unintended consequences for students who attend the event, as well as RAG, the Guild and the University.”

The ball received unwanted national coverage in January after CCTV footage was leaked showing students engaged in sexual activity during the event intended to promote safe sex.

Tabloid newspapers picked up the story leading to headlines such as ‘Degrees in misogyny: How obscene video filmed at 'safe sex ball' gives a disturbing insight into culture of sexual bullying and voyeurism at our top universities’, the leaked footage lead to the sacking of members of staff at the students' union.

The Guild told the student newspaper: “The Guild and RAG are working together to formulate a way to reinvent the SSB, maintaining its strong assets; raising charitable funds and awareness of key issues whilst providing great student development opportunities and a great night out for students.”

Every December hundreds of students have stripped to just their underwear to attend the late-night ball which raises thousands of pounds for charity.

The ball, which has been running for 21 years, dealt with controversy in the past and last year organisers were forced to apologise over an "incredibly insensitive" rape joke which was printed to publicise the event.

Prior to this year’s event, dozens of academics and university staff also petitioned against a "tribal" theme – dubbed racist by some students.

Many took to twitter after the news was announced describing it as the ‘End of an Era’ with one student posting: ‘Exeter no longer deserves the title of Probably The Best University In The World after banning SSB... #notcool #notimpressed’
