Exeter-born Sam to raise curtain on Europa League
FORMER Tiverton Town striker Sam Malsom is hoping for European glory this summer — as he looks for a move into the big time.
The 21-year-old will play for Faroe Islands club B36 Torshavn tomorrow night as they take on Georgian outfit Olimpi Rastavi in the first qualifying round of the new Europa League.
It will be the third time Malsom has featured in European competition after playing two UEFA Cup legs for B36 against Brondby IF — the match in Denmark being played in front of more than 20,000 fans.
It has been a fascinating journey for the Exeter-born forward, who played on loan at Ladysmead while on the books of Plymouth Argyle in 2007, notching twice in four games.
After leaving the Pilgrims, Malsom embarked on a nomadic quest for professional football, attending trials in Brunei, Latvia and Norway.
But a year ago the Devonian marksman pitched up at B36 — one of the Faroe capital's five sides — after his agent had arranged a trial for him.
Putting on an impressive display, Malsom signed until the end of the season and hasn't looked back since, scoring a number of goals for the side already in his second term with the club.
And while the Faroe Islands isn't generally considered a powerhouse of international football, the North Atlantic outpost has afforded him the chance to feature in one of Europe's top competitions.
It has also put him in the shop window for a host of other clubs, with a return to England in the future high on his agenda.
"There are a number of bigger teams looking at me across Scandinavia," he said.
"After the UEFA cup games last year I had a few teams from Sweden interested in me and I got good reports from the Danish media.
"My agent is going to advertise me to some bigger teams in bigger leagues after these Europa League games.
"My aim is always to play at the highest level possible and I would love to go back to England and play one day.
"But for now hopefully I can keep playing well and scoring goals for B36."
