The court heard how Hills is accused of stabbing Evans in the neck, head and shoulder.

The incident is alleged to have taken place in the early hours of Thursday, February 14, at a property in Geneva Court.

A knife is alleged to have been used in the incident.

Prosecutor Lyndsey Baker told magistrates the case was so serious it could only be heard at the city's crown court.

She said: "This incident was reported in the early hours of the morning by a woman who lives in Geneva Court. The victim was found conscious and breathing with serious stab injuries to his head, neck and shoulder."

She added that the victim suffered a two-inch laceration to his head and also sustained injuries to his arm.

Mr Evans was taken to the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital for treatment.

Hills was represented in court by Jeremy Tricks.

The defendant was arrested on Saturday, February 16, and was held at Heavitree Road police station until the court hearing on Monday.

The chairman of the bench told Hills: "You appear before us today with a very serious allegation against you. It is one of the most serious crimes that can be committed in this country."

Hills was remanded in custody and is expected to appear at Exeter Crown Court on Tuesday, March 5.

A second man, aged 23, was arrested in connection with the incident. He has been released on bail pending further enquiries until Tuesday, May 14.
