Three independent grocery stores in Exeter have closed their doors.

The Wilkies' stores in Beacon Lane, Beacon Heath; Pinhoe Road and Exwick Road, were all part of the NISA (Northern Independent Supermarkets Association) buying group of independent retailers.

No one was avaliable for comment at Wilkies stores but a spokesman for NISA said: " We can confirm that the Wilkies business has ceased trading.

"It is always sad to see a local retailer, which serves its community, go out of business and Nisa hopes that the owners and staff at Wilkies can find a way forward and wish them all the best of luck.

"As Nisa does not own any stores itself, we are not at liberty to comment further on the situation at this time and details should be sought from the Wilkies management.

Wilkies Food Stores Limited was set up in 1998 with its main business address in Beacon Lane. One of its founding directors was the late Mark Wilkinson, who died in 2010.

A memorial bench in his honour was put up overlooking the community orchard in Mincinglake Valley Park.

Wilkies opened in Beacon Lane, in 2007 after a £280,000 refurbishment with Mr Wilkinson knocking four derelict shops together to create the shop. The parade of shops was owned by Exeter City Council, which injected £150,000 into the revamp.

NISA is a mutual organisation owned by its members and operating like a co-operative, using the collective buying power of the large group of members to negotiate deals with suppliers

Its HQ is in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire.

Members own and operate more than 4,000 convenience stores and small supermarkets.

Nisa stores are independently owned retail outlets operated throughout the UK.
