STUDENTS have been urged "not to get involved" with a website which urges them to share stories about alleged debauchery in Exeter.

The University of Exeter has expressed its disappointment at the "Exeter Uni Confessions" page which has been established on Facebook.

It was set up as the new university term began and its creators, who are anonymous, insist it was not intended to cast the institution in a bad light.

It urges former and current students to send in their most "disgusting, hilarious, embarrassing confessions" from their times at Exeter University.

These are also posted anonymously and messages posted on the site include stories about vandalism committed in the city, drunken exploits and frequent references to sex.

A University spokesperson said: "The University is aware of this site. When so many other students are working hard to build a positive impression of student life, it is a great shame that this is getting attention.

"We would advise students not to get involved. We understand that a number of other universities have confessions sites; Facebook tells us that they do not contravene their guidelines."

Those behind the page insist that will take "appropriate action" if anyone is offended by the nature and content of what is posted.

They say: "The page is in no way affiliated with the University of Exeter, it is purely for fun. It is meant not to offend anyone, whether they be a student or staff of the university.

"We can not be sure if any of these statuses are actually from people associated with the university so their actions do not reflect that of those of the university.

"If anyone has a problem with a status or the page, message us and we will take appropriate action.

"We delete all confessions, as we post them so they can not be traced. Any confession is made purely by that person's choice. The administrators of the this page are void of any responsibility of what is posted on this page."
