Mrs Sheard's body was found at the house, where her son was also living, on July 11, 2012. Cane was arrested in Gloucester three days after the alleged murder, after police and his father Michael Cane made a public appeal. His mother's car had earlier been found in Bristol.
Cane worked for the Exmouth-based building contractors DJH Roofers, where his mother also worked as a secretary.
Judge Francis Gilbert, QC, adjourned the case for trial and extended custody limits to allow his continued detention.
