Expansion plans for Exeter church
AN historic Exeter church is hoping to get planning permission for a two-storey extension.
St Michael and All Angels, Alphington has no church hall and the extension with a servery would help make up for this lack.
And although the church is the ecclesiastical equivalent of Grade II*, parishioners are hopeful of being given permission as they would simply be replacing what was there before.
Churchwarden Julia Tooth correct said: "The church used to have a vestry which was demolished and the planning permission is to rebuild something that was there before.

"It would provide extra facilities at the back of the church, a small kitchen area to enable the church to do more socialising.
"We don't have a church hall but there is a village hall which we use and our intention is not to set up in competition to the village hall which is very important to the Alphington community.
"Our intention, rather, is to provide something for church use. If we have committee meetings they have to be at the back of the church and with winter coming it is not economical to heat the whole church for a small meeting.
"If we get planning permission it will enable us to do a little bit more for the congregation and visitors to the church."
The church is also hoping to improve access, making the church more wheelchair and buggy-user friendly.
