THE Federation of Small Businesses is launching its third annual Celebrating Small Business Awards 2008—a search for the best employer and best small business in the city.

Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw has backed the competition by praising small firms for the work that they do and the value they add to the economy.

He said: "We have seen a massive growth in small business over recent years and they are hugely important to Exeter's economy in terms of the jobs they create.

"They provide thousands of jobs, great variety, and through the taxes they pay they contribute to public services.

"Like everyone at the moment, small businesses are going through an uncertain period because of the credit crunch, and life will be very tough for many, so it's important that we support them and recognise their achievements.

"The general economic downturn is the biggest challenge facing small business now. People are spending less and, for those who rely on transport, the high oil prices will impact on their industries. Food sector businesses are also paying significantly more now for foodstuffs and commodities."

Mr Bradshaw also spoke of the role that the FSB plays in promoting and supporting small city firms and of the importance of the annual awards.

"The FSB does a great job representing small business interests, not just in Exeter but across the South West. They are a very effective voice.

"It's tough to run a small business and it is very heartening that they are being celebrated in this way.

"Small business owners work hard and take risks, and I am very pleased to be able to present the awards at the annual dinner."

Nigel Hillier, regional FSB chairman, said: "We started these awards because we wanted to raise the profile of the FSB.

"There are 560 members in Exeter and people in small business work very hard and provide a good service to the local community, so it is a chance to celebrate this and recognise that we are of value.

"In Exeter there are lots of businesses that offer good specialised services, and the FSB awards are a great way to publicise what they are doing."

When nominating the Best Small Business Employer, write about what he or she has done to help you with training or your own personal development.

Businesses can either nominate themselves, or a client or employee can nominate them.

An entry form is included here and must be returned to the FSB, by Monday, September 29. Forms can be posted at no cost to: Freepost FSB Region 121. Winners will be announced on Friday, October 31, at a ceremony at Havana Bar and Restaurant on Exeter Quay.
