Festive market on Exeter's Cathedral Green is approved
A festive market for Exeter's Cathedral Green has been given the go-ahead by councillors.
Members of the planning committee approved proposals for the Christmas attraction – that will be in place between November 23 and December 16 - and described it as a "long overdue" addition to the city.
The consent will last for five years and concerns from the committee over the length were addressed by a condition that things can be refined and improved after the first year should any issues arise. Planners told councillors that although the market would increase activity on the green it was "not considered harmful" and was "nothing intrusive."

The market will feature more than 50 traders with the aim of offering visitors a journey around the globe with items such as a roast Hog, Belgian chocolates, Baklava, crepes, speciality cheeses and meats from across the continent. Local retailers will make up 20 per cent of the traders who will be offering traditional Christmas crafts and local foods alongside a local glass blower will be demonstrating his skills. It will be open from 10am each day and 11am on Sunday.
Background music and entertainment in the form of buskers and performers may be provided and a premises licence for entertainment and alcohol consumption is required. Cllr Rosie Denham said: "I really welcome the conditions that cover any issues or concerns that we may have. Most of the issues that may worry people are licensing issues and not for us, as the planning committee, to consider."
The application was approved unanimously.
Following the council's decision Exeter city centre manager John Harvey said: "The Christmas market offers a wonderful opportunity for local retailers and residents of the city to enjoy and make the most of the festive period."
The opening of the market will take place on the evening of November 23 with a light parade led by schoolchildren.
