Richard Duffy admits Exeter City will stir memories of last season’s incredible fightback at Boundary Park when they take on Oldham Athletic tomorrow afternoon.

The Grecians hit back from being 3-0 down at the interval to salvage a 3-3 draw in one of the finest comebacks in the club’s recent history.

Duffy insists the thrilling response is still fresh in the players’ memories and they will use it as a confidence-booster heading into the npower League One clash with Paul Dickov’s mid-table side.

“We were 3-0 down at half-time and the boys did tremendously well to score three goals in the last 15 minutes,” he said. “In the end, we could have won it. I’m sure the comeback will get mentioned before Saturday’s game – it will certainly be in the back of people’s minds.

“Of course, we don’t want to go 3-0 down against them again, but it’s worth recalling what we did that evening because it turned our season around. We were shocking in the first half and it could have been worse than 3-0 at half-time. But we held on, scored the first goal of the second half, and that changed the game.

“We are confident that, if we play our best, we can compete with the best in the league. It’s going to be another tough game on Saturday. We beat them 1-0 at home earlier in the season, but there are no easy games in this division, especially away from home. You have to be solid and build a good performance.

“If we can put everything together, we can go up there and get a positive result.”

Duffy has resurrected his season after bouncing back from an ankle injury and finally cementing his place at the heart of the City defence.

While he has been used as a holding midfielder at times this term, he insists his best position is centre-half.

Recent performances would appear to back up Duffy’s claims, as the defender’s return to the side has coincided with two clean-sheets from the last three games.

“I missed five or six weeks with an injury and I came back and played a few games in midfield,” he said. “Then I had three or four games out of the side and now I have got my chance again, so I intend to take it.

“I would say my best position at the moment is centre-half, but I just like playing whatever the position. The last three games we have kept two clean-sheets and only conceded one in the other game.”

Having tightened up at the back, Duffy insisted that City need to start taking their chances if they are to climb clear of the League One drop zone.

The Grecians have scored only 24 goals from 26 games and Duffy admits it is not just down to the strikers, but the responsibility of everyone in the side, to revive the side’s fortunes in front of goal.

“We have done OK defensively in the last few games and now we need to add a few more goals to our game as a team,” he said. “We should have beaten Yeovil and Hartlepool, but that’s the way it’s going for us at the moment.

“We’re getting chances but not being quite clinical enough to take them. That’s probably our only fault at the moment.

“It’s not the strikers who need to be scoring, it’s the team as a whole. We’ve all got to contribute to scoring goals. We haven’t created enough for them, and some games they haven’t quite managed to put them away.

“It’s about working together and I’m sure we will be fine. We’ve got a good group of lads and the team spirit is good,” Duffy concluded.
