Firefighters rescue horse from ditch near Okehampton

Firefighters yesterday rescued a horse which had got stuck into a deep ditch at Sticklepath, near Okehampton.

A specialist rescue team from Barnstaple joined two crews from Okehampton at just before 9am.

They found the 35-year-old horse measuring 16 hands had fallen on its side into a two-metre high ditch.

A heavy-object winching system from Exeter was drafted in and the horse was eventually rescued uninjured and left in the care of its owner and a vet.
